History of Regenerative Medicine
Over a thousand years ago it was recorded that an Indian physician used skin graft procedures for facial reconstruction, this was a start to medical discoveries of regenerative medicine and how life depends on stem cells. Although it was not referred to as regenerative medicine, the scientific world has explored regenerative medicine for thousands of years. Tissue grafting made an impact in the 16th century when an attempt was made to replace a patient’s leg that was diseased. Fast forward to the 20th century where the first kidney transplant was performed, followed by a liver and lung transplant. And now in the 21st century the era of tissue engineering has led to the field of Regenerative Medicine, like the treatments offered at Seattle Regenerative Medicine Center in the greater Seattle Area.
Regenerative Medicine Definition
Regenerative Medicine is the field of medicine that harnesses the body’s own natural healing processes to help create and restore living, functional tissues lost due to age, disease, trauma or congenital defects. Another way to describe Regenerative Medicine is that it is the process of replacing or regenerating human cells, tissues, or organs in order to restore normal function.
Some examples of Regenerative Medicine approaches in clinical practice are:
Cellular therapies: the injection of stem cells or progenitor cells into injured or damaged tissue.
Immunomodulation therapy: regeneration via biologically active molecules given alone or as secretions by infused cells. Tissue engineering: organs and tissue grown in the laboratory are then transplanted to replace damaged organs and restore function.
At Seattle Regenerative Medicine Center, we use cellular therapy approaches, utilizing your own cells (either platelets or bone marrow derived stem cells) to initiate and accelerate your body’s natural healing capabilities.
Cellular therapy simply refers to the transplantation of human cells in order to replace or repair damaged tissue or cells. In orthopedic conditions involving the musculoskeletal system, cellular therapy is typically referring to either the use of platelet rich plasma (PRP) or stem cells for treatment of bone, joint, muscle, tendon or ligament injuries. Both Stem Cell Therapy and Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy are available in Seattle at Seattle Regenerative Medicine Center.
Benefits and Advantages
Regenerative Medicine therapies like Stem Cell and Platelet Rich Plasma that are offered in Seattle at SRMC have preventative advantages and benefits.
Pain Reduction: Stem Cell Therapy and Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy focus on reducing pain and enhanced healing that addresses the cause of the pain versus just managing the symptoms. Both Stem Cell Therapy and Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy provide growth factors to aid in the healing of tissues that are injured allowing patients to heal and have less pain than traditional medicine.
Functionality Increase: Stem Cell Therapy and Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy promotes the production of collagen in the body that will strengthen tissues and tendons. Regenerative Medicine increases functionality by increasing the range of motion in the joints to allow you to move more freely.
Quick Recovery: Regenerative Medicine helps jump-start the process of repairing the tissues and tendons which lead to faster healing. The growth factors of Stem Cell Therapy and Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy allow you to return back to your normal daily routines faster and safer.
Risk Reduction of injury and pain: When you have regenerative medicine like Stem Cell Therapy and Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy your collagen strengthens and tightens the tendons if the joints. Due to the strengthening and tightening gained by utilizing regenerative medicine it reduces the risk of future pain and injuries.
