What is microneedling?

For those who are unfamiliar with the term, microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that involves using a device to create tiny punctures in the skin. The punctures stimulate the production of two proteins that are essential for youthful, healthy skin. Microneedling can be used to treat a variety of concerns, including acne scars, enlarged pores, fine lines, and wrinkles.

What concerns can microneedling address?

  • Microneedling addresses all the following conditions:
  • Sun damage (sunspots)
  • Age and brown spots
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Dark-colored stretch marks
  • Acne scarring
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Large pore size
  • Surgical scarring

Microneedling with SkinPen

The SkinPen is the only FDA-cleared and approved medical-grade microneedling device on the market to treat the face, neck, and body. The SkinPen creates thousands of precise micro-injuries or “micro-channels” in the dermis, which stimulates new collagen synthesis without causing scar tissue formation. This technology takes advantage of the skin’s natural wound-healing process.

When the microneedling device creates the tiny channels in the skin, the skin naturally produces new collagen and elastin in the areas treated, firming the skin. Patients see significant improvement in overall skin tone and texture with the reduction of fine lines, discoloration, and a reduction in pore size as well.

What should I expect from my SkinPen treatment?

Microneedling is a relatively short and painless in-office procedure. Topical numbing cream is typically applied to the treatment area for 30 minutes prior to the procedure. The treatment typically takes 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the size and number of areas treated and the severity of damage on the skin. While you may have some redness and swelling immediately after the procedure, there is usually minimal downtime. By the second day, patients have a pink glow and can wear sunscreen & mineral makeup if they choose to do so.

Who is a good candidate for SkinPen?

The SkinPen is safe for all skin types and colors and for all ages, although we recommend the procedure for ages 16 years old or older.

How many microneedling treatments will I need?

Every patient is different, but for optimal results, we recommend a series of three treatments spaced approximately four to six weeks apart. By continuing to stimulate collagen production over multiple treatments, patients’ end results will be enhanced, and they will see a reduction in fine lines, wrinkles, pore size, and overall texture and tone. Our licensed master aesthetician Kristal will work with you to create a customized treatment plan based on your skin issue and your skincare goals.

Will I see results after my first microneedling session?

A single microneedling session can produce noticeable results, but multiple sessions may be necessary to achieve the desired effect. If you're looking for a safe and effective way to improve your skin's appearance, microneedling may be right for you.

Can microneedling be combined with other procedures?

Absolutely, yes! We recommend you come in for a complimentary skin consultation and see if Microneedling is the best treatment for your concerns. At that time, Kristal can discuss different combination treatments like lasers, IPL photo-facials, peels, or HydraFacial. All these procedures complement microneedling to give patients a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance. In addition, they are all non-invasive and involve little to no downtime.

Is microneedling like dermal rolling?

Microneedling is a more effective treatment than dermal rolling, due to the deeper penetration of the needles and the ability to tailor the treatment to everyone’s needs. If you are considering microneedling, be sure to consult with our qualified aesthetician or dermatologist to ensure that it is the best way to handle your aesthetic concerns.

Are there any guidelines to follow before my treatment?

Before treatment, we recommend that you stop using any products with exfoliating agents such as retinoic acid, glycolic/salicylic acids, tretinoin, benzoyl peroxide, and astringents for 24 hours in advance. If you have a history of herpes or cold sores, it is advised that you take antiviral medication both before and after the treatment.

Post-treatment guidelines for microneedling

SkinPen’s post-treatment instructions include:

  • For the next six to eight hours after your treatment, avoid putting anything on your skin, including makeup, sunscreen, or any type of product.
  • Do not wear clothing, headbands, or scarves on the treated area.
  • It is normal to experience redness and swelling, and these symptoms will generally disappear within one or two days.
