What is laser skin resurfacing?

At Radiance Aesthetics Medical Spa in Seattle, we use Venus Concept’s focused laser resurfacing solutions to revolutionize your skincare. The laser device directs short pulses of light energy at skin imperfections such as scars, pigmentation, wrinkles, or lesions to reduce their appearance while simultaneously firming and tightening the pores for a more youthful-looking complexion. The outermost layer of damaged skin is vaporized while the deeper layers are gently warmed to stimulate collagen regeneration. Collagen is a protein, abundant in youth, that is responsible for the skin’s suppleness, hydration, and luminosity.

After laser skin resurfacing

The amount of downtime required by each patient will vary based on the intensity of the laser skin resurfacing treatment and the areas targeted. More aggressive resurfacing sessions may need up to five days of recovery, while milder treatments may only require 24 hours of downtime. Be sure to follow your provider's aftercare instructions carefully, as this will help to preserve your results.

Recovery timeline and tips

  • Immediately after your session – At first, your skin will feel sensitive, as though you have a sunburn. For the first few days, you may experience redness, stinging, swelling, and itching. Take care not to pick at, rub, or disturb the skin in any way, as this can lead to an infection or scarring. Blisters and crusts may appear, but this is all part of the healing process and is no cause for alarm.
  • 5-7 days post-procedure – At this stage, the skin may begin to dry out and peel. The new skin beneath the discarded layer will be pink and sensitive. Over the next several months, it will gradually begin to look a normal color.
  • You can gently cleanse the treated areas 2-5 times a day.
  • Use an extra pillow for the first 4-5 nights to elevate your head. This will help to reduce any swelling.
  • You can apply a cold compress or ice pack every 1-2 hours for 15 minutes at a time. Do this for the first 24-48 hours after your treatment.
  • A thin layer of an occlusive moisturizer or antibiotic cream can be applied to the skin twice a day throughout the healing process.
  • Make sure to stay away from any treatments using tretinoin or glycolic acid for a month after laser skin resurfacing in Bellevue. Avoid any topical products that might cause irritation for the first six weeks post-procedure.
  • Refrain from smoking, as smoking typically prolongs the healing process.
  • Once the skin has healed, you should use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen daily that protects against UVA and UVB rays.
  • Use a daily moisturizer that is approved by your provider.
